SQUARSH is a bizarre and terrifying gravity-manipulating supervillain whose origin, identity, and motives remain unknown. Clad in an absurd pink costume and speaking only a single word, SQUARSH might appear ridiculous at first glance.
That impression rarely survives first contact.
SQUARSH possesses precise and devastating control over gravitational force, allowing him to pin enemies helplessly to the ground, increase his own effective mass, collapse structures, hurl opponents through sudden shifts in weight, or escape by altering his relationship to local gravity.
He is one of the strangest recurring enemies in Booster’s rogues gallery.
Background
[edit]SQUARSH appeared without warning during a public exhibition sponsored by the Nova Institute, where a prototype gravity-regulation system was being demonstrated for industrial and spaceflight applications.
The demonstration ended in disaster.
Security footage showed a pink-clad figure standing calmly amid floating debris, crushed machinery, and terrified civilians pressed flat against the floor by invisible force. Witnesses reported that he said only one word before the building’s central testing chamber imploded:
“SQUARSH.”
Since then, SQUARSH has appeared sporadically at sites connected to advanced physics, orbital engineering, experimental propulsion, and metahuman research. He rarely steals anything obvious. Sometimes he destroys equipment. Sometimes he simply watches it fail. Sometimes he attacks scientists whose work appears to involve gravity, mass, or dimensional stress.
No consistent motive has been established.
Theories
[edit]Several competing theories exist regarding SQUARSH’s true nature.
Some believe he was once a human physicist transformed by a failed gravity experiment, his mind damaged and his identity erased by exposure to warped spacetime.
Others suggest he is an alien or extradimensional being attempting to communicate through a body and language poorly suited to human reality.
A third theory holds that “SQUARSH” is not his name at all, but a warning, command phrase, or involuntary vocalization triggered whenever he manipulates gravity.
None of these theories has been proven.
SQUARSH himself has offered no clarification.
Powers
[edit]SQUARSH has extraordinary control over gravity and mass.
His powers include:
- Gravity Increase – He can dramatically increase the gravitational pull affecting people, vehicles, buildings, or localized areas.
- Mass Manipulation – He can increase his own effective mass or that of nearby objects, making them nearly impossible to move.
- Crushing Force – He can pin opponents to the ground or compress objects with lethal pressure.
- Gravity Distortion – He can alter the direction or intensity of gravitational fields, throwing enemies off balance or sending debris hurtling unpredictably.
- Defensive Weighting – By increasing his own mass, SQUARSH can resist knockback, impacts, and many forms of physical attack.
- Escape Applications – He can reduce or redirect gravitational force around himself, allowing sudden leaps, floating movement, or impossible changes in direction.
SQUARSH’s control is disturbingly precise. He has crushed weapons without harming the hands holding them, flattened armored vehicles while leaving nearby civilians untouched, and immobilized flying heroes by abruptly increasing their effective weight.
Personality
[edit]SQUARSH is nearly impossible to read.
He does not threaten, bargain, explain, laugh, or monologue. He simply appears, acts, and departs. His silence makes him far more frightening than his strange costume would suggest.
The only sound he reliably makes is the word “SQUARSH,” spoken in a flat, heavy tone. Sometimes it precedes an attack. Sometimes it follows one. Sometimes he says it while staring at machinery, victims, or empty space.
Whether the word expresses anger, satisfaction, pain, command, or identity remains unknown.
Reputation
[edit]Among heroes, SQUARSH is considered deceptively dangerous. His appearance has led more than one inexperienced opponent to underestimate him.
That mistake can be fatal.
Booster in particular regards SQUARSH as one of her most unsettling enemies, not because he is the most powerful villain she has faced, but because he seems impossible to understand. She has described fighting him as “trying to argue with a falling building.”
Legacy
[edit]SQUARSH endures as one of the strangest villains of the Modern Age: absurd, frightening, inexplicable, and unforgettable.
He may be a damaged scientist.
He may be an alien intelligence.
He may be something stranger.
Whatever he is, when the air grows heavy and the floor begins to crack, heroes know what word comes next.
