The Saboteur was the codename used by Joachim Kruger, a Nazi infiltrator and master spy whose flesh was permanently altered by exposure to an experimental wartime chemical weapon. Transformed into a living master of disguise, Kruger became one of the most dangerous espionage operatives employed by the Third Reich during the Golden Age, conducting sabotage, infiltration, and assassination missions against the Allies and repeatedly clashing with the Victory Squadron.
Unlike many wartime supervillains, the Saboteur rarely sought open confrontation. His greatest weapon was uncertainty. By the time his enemies realized he had infiltrated an organization, replaced an ally, or assumed a new identity, the damage was usually already done.
Joachim Kruger
[edit]Before his transformation, Joachim Kruger served as an officer within the Nazi SS and demonstrated exceptional aptitude for intelligence work, languages, and covert operations. Cold, disciplined, and intensely patient, Kruger excelled at disappearing into hostile environments and gaining the trust of those around him.
Even before acquiring his strange abilities, he was considered one of the Reich’s most promising infiltration specialists.
That reputation only grew after the accident that changed him forever.
The Experimental Gas

Operating primarily within the United States, he infiltrated military facilities, defense contractors, shipping operations, and intelligence networks while carrying out acts of sabotage designed to weaken the Allied war effort.
Several major wartime disasters were later suspected to have involved him, including factory explosions, stolen research projects, and compromised military operations.
Unlike flamboyant Nazi supervillains who announced themselves openly, the Saboteur preferred anonymity and manipulation. Entire storylines involving him often unfolded as paranoid mysteries, with heroes struggling to determine which allies could still be trusted.
His ability to move unseen through American society made him uniquely dangerous.

Persistent rumors have linked the Saboteur to early postwar espionage networks and even to the rise of HAVOC during the Silver Age. Several HAVOC infiltration operations demonstrated techniques eerily similar to Kruger’s methods.
No definitive proof has ever emerged.
That uncertainty may be exactly what he intended.
