“They taught me how to kill. I decided who deserved it.”
— Serpent
Serpent is the vigilante identity of Samuel Nakamura, a former Yakuza assassin who turned against his own organization after the murder of his family. Operating primarily in San Francisco, he has transformed a lifetime of lethal training into a focused campaign against organized crime.
Background
[edit]Samuel Nakamura was raised within the orbit of organized crime, eventually becoming an operative for the Japanese Yakuza operating in San Francisco. His rise within that structure was built on discipline, precision, and a willingness to carry out assignments that required both skill and discretion. By the time he reached adulthood, he had become one of the organization’s most reliable assassins.
That loyalty was not returned.
When internal conflicts within the Yakuza escalated, Nakamura’s family was targeted and killed, an act intended both as punishment and as a warning to others. The decision severed his connection to the organization completely. Rather than disappear or attempt to rebuild within the same system, he turned his training against those who had created him.
The Serpent Identity
[edit]Adopting the name Serpent, Nakamura began a systematic campaign against Yakuza operations in San Francisco. His methods reflected his background: controlled, efficient, and designed to dismantle networks rather than simply eliminate individuals. Over time, his activities extended beyond the organization that had wronged him, targeting broader criminal structures within the city.
His transformation from assassin to vigilante did not erase his past.
It redirected it.
Career
[edit]Following the collapse of the Yakuza presence he had once served, Serpent remained active as a crimefighter, focusing on organized crime, trafficking networks, and high-level criminal operations. His knowledge of how such systems function gives him a distinct advantage, allowing him to anticipate movement, identify vulnerabilities, and act before situations escalate.
He does not operate publicly, and his interventions are often only understood in retrospect, as criminal operations fail or disappear without clear explanation.
Association With Avenger
[edit]Serpent’s activities eventually brought him into contact with Avenger, whose more visible and direct approach to crimefighting contrasted with Nakamura’s methods. Their brief partnership established a level of mutual respect, with Avenger providing a model for operating beyond personal vengeance.
Though they no longer work together regularly, Nakamura continues to regard Avenger as a mentor figure, particularly in matters of restraint and purpose.
Skills
[edit]Serpent’s capabilities are the product of extensive and highly specialized training.
- Mastery of multiple weapons, including blades and firearms
- Advanced stealth and infiltration techniques
- Deep understanding of criminal networks and street-level operations
- Expert martial artist with emphasis on efficiency and control
He applies these skills with precision rather than excess.
Personality
[edit]Samuel Nakamura is controlled, deliberate, and shaped by loss. His actions are not impulsive, and his decisions reflect a careful balance between necessity and restraint. While his past as an assassin informs his methods, it does not fully define his current purpose.
He does not seek redemption in the abstract.
He measures it in outcomes.
Reputation
[edit]Within San Francisco’s criminal underworld, Serpent is regarded as a persistent and highly dangerous presence, someone who cannot be easily tracked or predicted. Among heroes, he is seen as an effective but guarded ally, one whose methods require a degree of distance even when his goals align with theirs.
He is known less by what he says than by what changes after he acts.
Legacy
[edit]Serpent represents the transformation of skill into purpose, illustrating how a life shaped by violence can be redirected without being forgotten. His work continues to influence the balance of power within the city, often in ways that remain invisible to those not directly affected.
He does not announce himself.
He leaves results behind.
