The Silhouette is the shadowy identity of Jamie Murphy, a hard-living merchant seaman who died in wartime Shanghai and was returned to life by sorcery. Gifted with the power to move like living darkness, he became one of the more mysterious operatives of the Golden Age and a member of the Victory Squadron.
Background
[edit]Jamie Murphy was a merchant seaman and notorious brawler, known from Singapore to San Francisco for his fists, his temper, and his appetite for trouble. During World War II, while in Japanese-occupied Shanghai, Murphy stumbled into a deadly confrontation that would change his fate.
One fog-choked night, he encountered a group of black-robed assassins attacking an elderly Chinese man. Fueled by bravado and drink, Murphy intervened—only to discover that his opponents were no ordinary killers. They moved with unnatural speed and precision, overwhelming him with ease.
Murphy was killed.
In the void beyond death, he was met by the old man he had tried to save. The man revealed himself to be a powerful wizard, targeted by assassins devoted to the goddess Kali. Murphy’s intervention, though unsuccessful in life, had bought the wizard enough time to survive and defeat his attackers.
In gratitude, the wizard used potent sorcery to return Murphy’s spirit to his body.
Murphy awoke changed.
Career
[edit]With his new existence came strange abilities. Murphy found he could become as insubstantial as shadow, moving unseen and unheard through the world. Recognizing the gift—and the debt he owed—he pledged himself to the wizard’s service.
Adopting the identity of The Silhouette, he embarked on a global campaign against crime, espionage, and occult threats. His activities spanned continents, often placing him in the shadows of larger conflicts.
His exploits eventually brought him to the attention of Captain Fortune, who recruited him into the Victory Squadron. Within the team, Silhouette served as a covert operative, specializing in infiltration and silent neutralization of enemy threats.
