Crucible:Sweet Petunia
Sweet Petunia
[edit]The Sweet Petunia was the famous rocketship of the Star Squadron, the interstellar heroes of the Silver Age who traveled the galaxy righting wrongs, protecting the innocent, and bringing hope to worlds far beyond Earth. To peaceful colonies, embattled outposts, and isolated star kingdoms, the sight of the Sweet Petunia dropping out of the starry dark meant rescue had arrived. To pirates, tyrants, slavers, raiders, and would-be conquerors, it meant their plans were about to be interrupted by one of the most celebrated heroic crews in space.
Built from an Izarian rocketship design and heavily modified by Kent Rhodes, the Sweet Petunia combined old-fashioned Silver Age romance with astonishing performance. With Space Ace at the controls, she could outrun and outfight almost any other ship in space.
Overview
[edit]The Sweet Petunia was not the largest, newest, or most heavily armed ship of her era, but she became one of the most beloved. She was fast, graceful, bright, and instantly recognizable, a heroic rocketship in the grand Silver Age tradition. Her polished hull, sweeping fins, glowing engines, and improbable name made her impossible to confuse with the warships and pirate craft that haunted the spaceways.
The Star Squadron used the Sweet Petunia as their transport, home, command post, rescue vessel, and fighting ship. She carried them from planet to planet, through asteroid fields, past imperial patrol zones, into forgotten nebulae, and across the frontier between charted civilization and the unknown.
Izarian Design
[edit]The Sweet Petunia was based on an Izarian rocketship design, reflecting the elegant engineering traditions of Izar and its neighboring worlds. Izarian ships were known for clean lines, responsive controls, efficient drives, and an almost artistic balance between power and maneuverability.
The original design was likely intended as a fast courier or patrol craft rather than a full combat vessel. Its light frame and efficient drive systems made it an ideal candidate for modification. Kent Rhodes recognized that the ship had extraordinary potential if its power distribution, control systems, and maneuvering architecture could be pushed beyond standard operating limits.
Modifications By Kent Rhodes
[edit]Kent Rhodes transformed the Sweet Petunia from a capable Izarian craft into a legendary starship. He overhauled her drive systems, tuned her control surfaces, strengthened her frame, and improved her tactical systems without sacrificing the lightness and responsiveness that made the original design so valuable.
His work focused on speed, maneuverability, and survivability. Rather than turning the ship into a lumbering gun platform, Rhodes made her faster, harder to hit, and more responsive to a great pilot. In the hands of an ordinary crew, the Sweet Petunia would have been impressive. In the hands of the Star Squadron, she became extraordinary.
Space Ace At The Controls
[edit]The Sweet Petunia’s reputation cannot be separated from that of Space Ace. With him at the controls, the ship could perform maneuvers that seemed impossible even to experienced pilots. He could skim a moon’s atmosphere, twist between asteroids, dive through weapons fire, and bring the ship out of a spin with inches to spare.
Space Ace understood the ship as more than a machine. He knew how far she could be pushed, when to trust her engines, when to cut power, and when to let momentum do what thrust could not. Many of the ship’s most famous victories came not from superior firepower, but from Ace’s ability to make the Sweet Petunia appear where no enemy expected her.
Speed And Maneuverability
[edit]Speed was the ship’s greatest advantage. The Sweet Petunia could outrun most patrol craft, pirate ships, raiders, and military escorts of comparable size. Her modified engines allowed rapid acceleration, sudden course changes, and emergency bursts of power that often made the difference between escape and destruction.
Her maneuverability was equally famous. The ship could roll, bank, climb, dive, and reverse vector with astonishing grace. This agility allowed the Star Squadron to fight larger enemies, evade ambushes, escape blockades, and rescue civilians from situations where a heavier ship would have been too slow or too clumsy.
Weapons And Combat Role
[edit]Although the Sweet Petunia was not built as a battleship, she carried enough weaponry to defend herself and challenge dangerous opponents. Her armament typically included forward rocket batteries, defensive blasters, point-defense systems, and precision energy projectors suitable for disabling hostile craft without destroying them outright.
The Star Squadron generally used the ship as a heroic intervention craft rather than a military asset. The Sweet Petunia could duel pirate vessels, knock out raider engines, blast open prison stations, clear debris fields, and protect evacuation convoys. Against major warships, she relied on speed, skill, and daring rather than brute strength.
Rescue And Exploration Role
[edit]The Sweet Petunia was as much a rescue ship as a fighting craft. Her holds carried emergency supplies, medical equipment, pressure suits, repair drones, spare atmosphere tanks, field tools, and rescue lines. The Star Squadron used her to evacuate endangered colonists, pull survivors from wrecked ships, deliver medicine to quarantined moons, and carry refugees away from collapsing regimes.
She also served as the team’s exploratory vessel. The Star Squadron used her to investigate lost worlds, derelict stations, unexplained distress signals, ancient alien ruins, and strange regions of space where ordinary ships rarely ventured. In this role, the Sweet Petunia represented the bright exploratory spirit of the Silver Age: danger, wonder, and gallantry under alien stars.
Reputation Across The Galaxy
[edit]Among inhabited worlds, the Sweet Petunia became a symbol of rescue and righteous defiance. Children on distant planets built toy versions of the ship. Frontier settlers painted her emblem on landing pads. Spaceport workers claimed they could identify the sound of her engines before she came into view.
Her name, seemingly gentle and almost comic, became part of her legend. Criminals mocked it until the ship appeared on their scanners. After that, few laughed. In underworld circles, “the Petunia is coming” became a warning that the Star Squadron had found the trail.
Legacy
[edit]The Sweet Petunia remains one of the iconic spacecraft of the Silver Age. She embodies the grand old dream of space heroics: a brave crew, a fast rocketship, impossible odds, and a galaxy full of people who still need saving.
She was not merely a vehicle. She was the Star Squadron’s home among the stars, their badge of arrival, and the bright silver streak that told the oppressed and endangered that help was on the way.
