“I am a member of Mr. Swann’s staff.”

Vickers is the mysterious British enforcer of New York crime boss Enoch Swann, a relentlessly composed professional whose obscure history and extraordinary resilience have made him one of the Night Shift’s most dangerous recurring opponents.

History

[edit]

Virtually nothing is known about Vickers before his arrival in New York. No reliable record of his birth, education, military service, criminal history, or entry into the United States has been discovered. “Vickers” is assumed to be an alias, although he has never offered another name and appears mildly puzzled when asked whether he has one.

Vickers emerged as the personal enforcer of Enoch Swann during Swann’s campaign to take control of the New York underworld. Unlike Swann’s street soldiers and hired metahuman operatives, Vickers seldom commands crews or participates in territorial warfare. He is dispatched when Swann wants a specific person found, an object recovered, or a difficult matter brought to a final conclusion.

He describes his position simply as being “in Mr. Swann’s service.”

Following Swann’s victory in the Nights of Fire, Vickers became a persistent enemy of the Night Shift. He has broken into their safe houses, disrupted their investigations, recovered evidence taken from Swann’s organization, and defeated several members in close combat. His encounters with the team suggest that he has studied their abilities and habits in exacting detail.

Abilities

[edit]

Vickers possesses no confirmed superhuman abilities. Official assessments classify him as a highly trained baseline human with exceptional strength, endurance, situational awareness, and close-combat skill.

He fights without flourish, using direct holds, joint breaks, improvised weapons, and the physical environment. He has continued functioning after injuries that would incapacitate most people, but medical examination has never established that he is an augmented or parahuman. Whether this resilience is the product of unusual conditioning, suppressed enhancement, or something else remains unknown.

Vickers is also an experienced investigator, interrogator, surveillance operative, and security specialist. He speaks several languages and possesses detailed knowledge of military and intelligence procedures from multiple countries.

Personality

[edit]

Vickers is quiet, formal, and unfailingly polite. He rarely raises his voice and addresses allies, enemies, and victims as “sir” or “madam.” His courtesy does not indicate mercy. He can inflict extreme violence with the same restrained manner he brings to serving tea.

He dislikes unnecessary cruelty, disorder, and theatrical behavior. He will intervene to protect bystanders when doing so does not conflict with his assignment and has punished Swann’s subordinates for abusing civilians. These standards do not make him honorable. Vickers will carry out a brutal order without hesitation if he considers it part of his service to Swann.

He refuses codenames and does not consider himself a supervillain.

Relationship with Enoch Swann

[edit]

The precise nature of Vickers’ loyalty to Enoch Swann is unknown. He does not speak of wages, employment, or partnership, instead using the antiquated language of personal service. Swann trusts him with sensitive information and assignments that he delegates to no one else.

Vickers’ loyalty appears absolute, but not affectionate. He never flatters Swann and has occasionally contradicted him in private. Swann accepts this behavior from Vickers in a way he would not tolerate from another subordinate.

It remains unclear whether Swann recruited Vickers, inherited his service, rescued him, or bound him through some undisclosed agreement.

Appearance

[edit]

Vickers is a tall, powerfully built man apparently in his early sixties. He has close-cropped iron-gray hair, a weathered face, and a severe, habitually disapproving expression. He generally wears a plain charcoal suit, dark tie, black leather gloves, and polished shoes.

He frequently carries a tightly furled black umbrella, even in clear weather. No concealed mechanism has been found within it, although Night Shift members remain convinced that it must serve some purpose beyond keeping off the rain.

Unresolved Questions

[edit]

Investigations of Vickers have produced fragments of contradictory information. Unverified photographs appear to place a similar man at intelligence and military operations in Belfast, Berlin, Hong Kong, southern Africa, and the Persian Gulf. The dates attached to some of these images would make Vickers considerably older than he appears.

Several explanations have been proposed:

  • Vickers was the subject of an abandoned British enhancement program.
  • More than one operative has used the name and identity.
  • His aging and physical endurance are the result of an unregistered parahuman ability.
  • The photographs have been deliberately falsified.
  • Vickers is exactly what he claims to be: a particularly capable man in Enoch Swann’s service.

None has been confirmed.

Notes

[edit]
  • Vickers never provides a first name. His standard response is, “Vickers will do.”
  • He carries no visible firearm.
  • He prefers strong tea and will wash and return a borrowed cup whenever circumstances permit.
  • He becomes visibly irritated when addressed as “Vic.”
  • Vickers’ exact nationality is presumed to be British, but even British observers have been unable to place his accent reliably.
