“You still believe discipline matters, Drew. That rules matter.
That people matter.
That is why I will always be stronger than you.”
— Viper
Viper is the cybernetically enhanced renegade operative identity of Marcus Vale, the second survivor of the classified PHASE II cyber-soldier initiative that created Cobra.
Where Cobra became a hero and leader, Viper became something else entirely:
A predator engineered for modern warfare.
Possessing cybernetic capabilities comparable to Cobra’s but stripped of restraint, loyalty, or morality, Viper is regarded as one of the deadliest enhanced operatives on Earth and the single greatest personal enemy of Cobra.
He is the failure PHASE II tried to erase.
Origin
[edit]Marcus Vale was one of PHASE II’s most effective covert operatives—an infiltration specialist with exceptional combat instincts and an alarming talent for psychological warfare.
When Drew Sheffield was critically injured during a catastrophic mission failure, PHASE II initiated the experimental COBRA cybernetics program in an attempt to create a next-generation battlefield operative.
Officially, only one subject survived the augmentation process.
That was a lie.
Vale survived as well.
But unlike Sheffield, the integration process altered him psychologically as much as physically. The experimental cybernetics amplified aggression, emotional detachment, and predatory behavior patterns already present beneath the surface.
PHASE II determined Vale was too unstable to control.
Recall and shutdown orders were issued immediately.
The retrieval team disappeared without explanation.
Months later, classified weapons shipments began vanishing across Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia. Entire covert operations collapsed overnight. Intelligence personnel were found dead under impossible circumstances.
One name kept surfacing:
Viper.
Cobra and Viper
[edit]The COBRA initiative was originally intended to create two operatives:
Cobra and Viper.
Two perfectly coordinated cybernetic soldiers capable of functioning as living tactical weapons.
Instead, the project produced enemies.
Where Cobra believes power requires discipline, Viper believes discipline is merely another form of weakness. He sees governments, laws, and moral systems as obsolete structures waiting to be replaced by superior individuals willing to seize control.
To Viper, Cobra is not merely an enemy.
He is proof that Marcus Vale could have become something better.
That is why Viper hates him.
The Black Mambas
[edit]Over time, Viper assembled a network of rogue operatives, assassins, mercenaries, cybernetic smugglers, and former intelligence agents known as the Black Mambas.
The organization operates as a deniable global strike force specializing in:
- Political assassinations
- Corporate sabotage
- Technology theft
- Counter-intelligence operations
- Extraction and elimination missions
Unlike ordinary criminal organizations, the Black Mambas function with military precision and advanced tactical coordination.
Many members possess stolen or experimental augmentations derived from abandoned PHASE II research.
Several world governments officially deny the organization exists.
PHASE II does not.
Powers
[edit]Viper’s cybernetic enhancements rival—and in some respects exceed—those of Cobra.
- Teleportation – Rapid short-range tactical repositioning
- Enhanced Strength – Cybernetically amplified musculature
- Enhanced Durability – Reinforced synthetic skeletal systems
- Enhanced Reflexes – Near-instant combat response capability
- Adaptive Targeting Systems – Predictive combat analysis software
- Stealth Integration – Advanced infiltration and camouflage systems
Weapons and Equipment
[edit]Viper continually upgrades and modifies his systems using stolen experimental technology.
His arsenal commonly includes:
- Monomolecular combat blades
- Neurotoxin dart launchers
- Electromagnetic pulse weaponry
- Variable-spectrum stealth fields
- Tactical drones and battlefield AI systems
Unlike Cobra’s disciplined loadouts, Viper’s technology is designed for intimidation, disruption, and overwhelming force.
Personality
[edit]Viper is intelligent, charismatic, patient, and utterly ruthless.
He prefers manipulation over brute force and often engineers conflicts long before revealing his involvement. He studies opponents psychologically, exploiting weaknesses with surgical precision.
He enjoys forcing heroes into impossible choices.
Especially Cobra.
Unlike many supervillains, Viper does not seek chaos for its own sake.
He seeks superiority.
Everything else is secondary.
Reputation
[edit]Within global intelligence circles, Viper is regarded as one of the most dangerous enhanced operatives alive.
PHASE II classifies him as:
MTAS 4 — Major National/Global Threat. Extreme Caution Urged.
Among criminals, his name carries near-mythic weight.
Among heroes, it carries fear.
Legacy
[edit]If Cobra represents the ideal cybernetic operative—
Viper represents the nightmare hidden inside the same dream.
A weapon that escaped command authority.
A soldier who decided humanity itself was obsolete.
