"Man’s gotta ride. Man’s gotta eat. Lucky for me, I do both."
Zydeco

Zydeco is the streetwise identity of Zydeco Quintillian Jones, an uplifted orangutan whose intelligence rivals—and often exceeds—that of humans. A product of controversial experiments at the Nova Institute, Zydeco has carved out a life for himself as a mechanic, rider, and occasional muscle-for-hire.

Background

[edit]

Zydeco Jones was born in the Sumatran jungle, an ordinary orangutan—at least at first. He was later taken into a series of secret experiments conducted by the Nova Institute, where scientists enhanced the intelligence of several animals to human levels and beyond.

The results were undeniable.

When the existence of these experiments became public, the enhanced animals—now articulate, educated, and self-aware—were brought before the courts. In a landmark decision, they were legally recognized as people and released into society.

Zydeco walked out free.

Career

[edit]

Life outside the lab wasn’t exactly smooth.

At the Institute, Zydeco had absorbed a peculiar but thorough education—largely through old biker movies. From them, he learned not only language and culture, but a deep appreciation for machines, freedom, and the open road.

Looking for work, he teamed up with his former “cell-mate,” Monk McGurk. Together, they formed an unconventional partnership, with Zydeco serving as mechanic, driver, and heavy hitter for the McGurk Detective Agency.

It’s not glamorous.

But it pays for the bananas.

Powers

[edit]

Zydeco retains the natural physical advantages of his species.

  • Exceptional strength far beyond that of a human
  • Powerful grip and climbing ability
  • High endurance and durability

Skills

[edit]

Zydeco combines raw intelligence with hard-earned street sense.

  • Highly intelligent and quick-thinking
  • Expert in motorcycles and cars—driving, repair, and racing
  • Familiar with criminal networks and underworld culture
  • Skilled in improvisation and close-quarters intimidation

Technology

[edit]

Zydeco favors simple but effective gear.

  • Pump-action shotgun loaded with rock salt
  • Access to vehicles and mechanical tools through his work

Personality

[edit]

Zydeco is sharp, independent, and a little wild. He enjoys life on his own terms, with a taste for risk, speed, and trouble—so long as it’s the manageable kind.

Though he plays the role of laid-back biker, there’s a keen mind behind it. He knows exactly what he’s doing, even when it looks like he doesn’t.

Reputation

[edit]

Among allies, Zydeco is dependable—if unconventional.

Among criminals, he’s unpredictable and not to be underestimated.

In the wider world, he’s a living symbol of the Nova Institute controversy: proof that intelligence and identity aren’t limited by species.

Legacy

[edit]

Zydeco represents a new kind of citizen in the Modern Age—one born not just of nature, but of science and choice.

He didn’t ask for the world he got.

But he’s making it his anyway.
