Monk McGurk is a simian private investigator created through controversial intelligence-enhancement experiments conducted by the Nova Institute. Gifted with genius-level intellect, streetwise instincts, and a fondness for detective fiction, Monk operates his own detective agency while navigating a world that still is not entirely sure what to make of him.

Origin

In one of the most controversial scientific programs of the modern era, the Nova Institute conducted experiments designed to elevate the intelligence of animal test subjects to human levels and beyond. The project produced startling results: several animals demonstrated advanced reasoning, self-awareness, speech, and emotional complexity.

Public reaction was explosive.

Following a landmark legal battle, the enhanced animals were officially recognized as sentient beings with legal rights and released into society.

One of those subjects was Monk McGurk.

Early Life

Even while still in captivity, Monk displayed remarkable deductive reasoning and an obsessive appetite for information. Given access to books, films, and educational materials, he consumed them voraciously, teaching himself language, criminology, human behavior, and eventually the hardboiled rhythms of detective fiction.

After his release—“from stir,” as he puts it—Monk used what he had learned to establish himself as a private investigator.

Monk’s agency is assisted by Mitzi Moreau, a nursing student, aspiring actress, and part-time model who serves as secretary, office manager, occasional getaway driver, and the only person capable of keeping the operation remotely organized.

He also occasionally employs his former cellmate Zydeco Jones as hired muscle.

Mr. Whiskers

Shortly after beginning his detective career, Monk encountered the criminal mastermind known as Mr. Whiskers, a malevolent enhanced guinea pig whose intellect rivaled his own. Their rivalry quickly escalated into one of the strangest recurring feuds in the modern superhero world.

The rodent keeps coming back.

Monk keeps shooting at him.
