The Plunderers are widely regarded as the first true supervillain team in superhero history.

The group was formed during the Golden Age after four of the Victory Squadron’s most dangerous enemies grew tired of suffering humiliating individual defeats at the hands of superheroes. Realizing that heroes benefited enormously from teamwork, the villains reached a revolutionary conclusion: criminals could unite as well.

The resulting alliance combined black magic, cursed immortality, brute force, and advanced technology into a single criminal organization.

With the Victory Squadron occupied overseas during wartime operations, the Plunderers launched an audacious crime spree targeting the wealthy banks and vaults of New York City. Convinced that no remaining heroes could stop them, the team began systematically looting the city.

Instead, they encountered resistance from the Prowler and Quarrel, who ultimately succeeded in defeating the villains and halting their criminal campaign.

Though initially broken apart, the Plunderers have reunited numerous times over the Golden Age, repeatedly returning whenever greed, revenge, or opportunity draws them together once more.

Philby McPeake is a sinister practitioner of black magic and one of the earliest occult supervillains of the Golden Age.

Black Paladin
Sir Cain is an immortal cursed warrior condemned to wander the Earth through the centuries.

Piledriver
Tug McGiffey is a brutal criminal equipped with a massive mechanical pile driver built into his right arm.

Professor Proteus
Rufus Crenshaw is a criminal scientific genius specializing in gadgets, traps, and advanced weaponry.

Legacy

The Plunderers established the model for countless later supervillain teams. Before their formation, most costumed criminals operated independently or in temporary partnerships. The Plunderers demonstrated how dangerous coordinated super-criminal operations could become when powerful villains combined their abilities.

Their influence can still be seen in later organizations ranging from the Marauders to the Fearsome Five.

Though often overshadowed by younger villain groups, the Plunderers remain legendary within criminal history as the original alliance of supervillains.
