"I already died once. You don't scare me."
— Ghoul

The Ghoul is the resurrected form of Harper St. Clair, a former private detective who returned from death as a relentless spirit of vengeance. Bound by an old sorcerous bargain, he exists in a state between life and death, driven to punish those who commit injustice.

Background

[edit]

Harper St. Clair grew up in New Orleans, the son of a woman desperate to protect him from the dangers of the world. In her fear, she made a deal with a Cajun sorceress, accepting a charm that would safeguard her son’s life.

She did not understand the full cost of that protection.

Years later, Harper became a private detective, navigating the shadowed underbelly of New Orleans with skill and determination. His work eventually brought him into conflict with the wizard Bad Moon, whose criminal enterprises relied on both mundane and mystical power.

Captured by thugs in Bad Moon’s employ, Harper was beaten to death.

But death did not claim him.

The charm placed upon him in childhood activated, resurrecting Harper as something no longer entirely human—a being driven by vengeance. Though he could be killed again, and often suffered for it, he would always return.

Harper St. Clair rose from death as the Ghoul.

Career

[edit]

As the Ghoul, Harper abandoned his former life as a detective and embraced a more direct form of justice. He became an avenger of the wronged, targeting criminals, occult threats, and those who believed themselves beyond consequence.

Operating primarily in New Orleans, the Ghoul has become a whispered legend among both criminals and the supernatural community. His presence signals not arrest or trial, but retribution.

He has occasionally partnered with Hex, particularly in cases involving magic, spirits, or otherworldly threats, where their methods and outlooks align.

Powers

[edit]

The Ghoul’s abilities stem from the sorcerous charm that binds him to the world.

  • Superhuman strength far beyond normal human limits
  • Immunity to pain and extreme physical resilience
  • Ability to move with near-total silence
  • A lethal “death touch” capable of inflicting mortal injury
  • Resurrection: though he can be killed, he inevitably returns

These powers make him an unusually persistent and terrifying opponent.

Skills

[edit]

Though transformed, Harper retains aspects of his former life.

  • Skilled investigator with a background in private detective work
  • Strong instincts for tracking and reading people
  • Familiarity with the criminal underworld of New Orleans

In his current existence, he has largely abandoned investigative work, preferring direct action.

Personality

[edit]

Harper St. Clair is a man shaped by death and return. Once a thoughtful investigator, he has become more focused, grim, and relentless.

He is not cruel, but he is unforgiving. Justice, to him, is immediate and personal.

Despite this, fragments of his old life remain. He still finds solace in music, particularly jazz clarinet, a reminder of the man he once was.

Reputation

[edit]

Among criminals, the Ghoul is a nightmare—a figure who cannot be killed and does not stop.

Among the innocent, he is a dark guardian.

Within the supernatural community, he is something else entirely: a man caught between worlds, sustained by magic that was never meant to be fully understood.

Legacy

[edit]

The Ghoul stands as a living—or unliving—consequence of desperate choices and hidden bargains.

His existence raises unsettling questions about the cost of protection, the nature of justice, and the thin line between salvation and damnation.

He was meant to be saved.

Instead, he was returned.
