The Swordsman is the criminal identity of Anton Leferrier, an Olympic fencer, entrepreneur, and flamboyant modern-day duelist who transformed himself into one of New York’s most theatrical and persistent costumed criminals. A self-styled robber of the rich and enemy of corporate corruption, Swordsman built his reputation through spectacular robberies, public challenges, daring escapes, and dramatic duels with some of the city’s greatest heroes — particularly Shadow.

Though unquestionably a criminal, Leferrier has always cultivated the image of a gentleman outlaw rather than a common thug. To his admirers, he is a romantic rogue standing against corporate greed and political corruption. To the authorities, he is an arrogant narcissist with a dangerous talent for turning grand larceny into public entertainment.

Both descriptions contain some truth.

Anton Leferrier

Anton Leferrier first achieved fame as an Olympic-level fencer celebrated for his precision, athletic grace, and flamboyant personality. Even during his competitive career, he possessed a gift for spectacle and self-promotion that made him a favorite with media audiences and corporate sponsors.

Outside athletics, Leferrier attempted to build a business empire through luxury sporting ventures and technology investments. That empire collapsed catastrophically during a series of hostile financial maneuvers involving companies tied to Andrews International. Though the exact details remain disputed, Leferrier became convinced that powerful corporate interests had deliberately ruined him in order to absorb his assets and eliminate competition.

The scandal destroyed his fortune almost overnight.

Leferrier responded with vengeance.

Birth Of The Swordsman

Adopting the masked identity of The Swordsman, Leferrier launched a campaign of robberies and public attacks targeting wealthy industrialists, financial institutions, luxury events, and corporate figures associated with Andrews International and related interests.

Unlike most thieves, Swordsman operated openly and theatrically. He announced crimes in advance, challenged security forces publicly, and often staged elaborate entrances and escapes designed to maximize humiliation for his enemies. His crimes quickly transformed him into both a media sensation and a persistent headache for law enforcement.

Public opinion became sharply divided.

Some viewed him as a dangerous criminal hiding vanity beneath political rhetoric.

Others saw him as a folk hero striking back against institutions perceived as untouchable.

Leferrier encouraged both interpretations whenever they suited him.

Enemy Of Shadow

Swordsman became a recurring enemy of Shadow, whose grim, methodical approach to crimefighting sharply contrasted with Leferrier’s flamboyant style. Their confrontations often resembled elaborate duels more than conventional superhero battles, with the Swordsman treating every encounter as both combat and performance.

Unlike many of Shadow’s enemies, Leferrier genuinely admired his opponent’s skill and intelligence. Their rivalry developed a strange undertone of mutual professional respect, though this did little to reduce the danger of their encounters.

Shadow himself once described Swordsman as: “A born actor who mistakes arrogance for nobility.”

Leferrier reportedly considered this an excellent compliment.

Skills And Abilities

Swordsman possesses no superhuman powers, but his physical abilities and combat skill place him among the finest non-powered duelists in the modern era.

His known abilities include:

Personality

Anton Leferrier is charismatic, vain, intelligent, and deeply theatrical. He views life as performance and believes that style, presentation, and symbolism matter just as much as victory itself. Even his crimes are often staged with dramatic timing and visual composition in mind.

At the same time, there is genuine bitterness beneath the charm. Leferrier sincerely believes he was betrayed and ruined by powerful corporate interests protected by wealth and political influence. His criminal identity allows him to transform personal humiliation into public rebellion.

Unfortunately, his ego often undermines his own principles. Swordsman enjoys admiration, attention, and celebrity far too much to function as a true revolutionary. He is ultimately as much performer as crusader.

Perhaps more so.

Imprisonment

After years of criminal activity and repeated clashes with superheroes, Swordsman was eventually captured and sentenced to prison for multiple counts of robbery, assault, and organized criminal activity.

Even incarceration has done little to diminish his notoriety. Interviews, biographies, documentaries, and speculative films about his exploits continue to circulate widely, and there remains a strange undercurrent of public fascination surrounding him.

Leferrier himself reportedly considers prison merely: “An intermission.”

Legacy

The Swordsman became one of the classic swashbuckling rogues of the modern era, blending gentleman-thief traditions, anti-corporate populism, Silver Age theatricality, and modern superhero action into a recurring enemy of Shadow and other urban heroes.

Because Anton Leferrier never wanted merely to steal money.

He wanted the world to watch him do it.
