Protector is the armored identity of Jason Smith, a pioneering engineer, tactician, and one of the founding leaders of modern superhero organization. Best known as the original leader of Watchstar, he later transitioned from field operations to global and interstellar leadership as Director-General of PHASE III.

Background

Jason Smith began his career as a test pilot and engineer, combining technical expertise with practical experience in high-risk environments. His life changed dramatically when he was captured by HAVOC and forced to develop advanced weapons systems for their use.

Instead, he built something else.

Using the resources at his disposal, Smith constructed a prototype battlesuit and plasma weapon, turning his captors’ project against them. His escape marked the beginning of his career as Protector, a name that reflected both his capabilities and his intent.

Watchstar

Protector became the founding leader of Watchstar, establishing its structure, operational philosophy, and early reputation. Under his leadership, the team grew into one of the most important forces for global defense, responding to threats beyond the capacity of any single nation.

His leadership style combined technical precision with a strong sense of responsibility, earning him the trust of both his teammates and the institutions that relied on them.

He would go on to lead other teams as well, including AeroCorps, further shaping the development of organized heroism.

Death And Return

During the invasion of Isola, Protector was assassinated by Slayer in a targeted strike intended to destabilize resistance efforts. In the moments before his death, Smith executed a contingency he had designed himself, uploading his consciousness into his suit’s central system.

The body was lost.

The mind remained.

Years later, a clone body was grown, allowing Smith to return to physical form and resume his role. The event marked one of the most significant resurrections in modern superhero history, raising complex questions about identity, continuity, and what it means to survive.

Protector did not linger on those questions.

He went back to work.

PHASE III

Following his return and continued service, Smith eventually stepped away from active field operations to assume the role of Director-General of PHASE III, a United Nations initiative focused on space-based defense and exploration.

In this capacity, he now operates on a broader scale, shaping policy and strategy rather than engaging directly in combat.

He has not entirely retired.

He has changed arenas.
