“They called us monsters long before we ever fought back.”
— Halo

Halo is the codename of Carolyn Hyland, a powerful parahuman illusionist and member of Factor M. Once a frightened young woman hunted by her own community, Halo became radicalized after surviving anti-parahuman violence that destroyed her family and her former life. Today she is one of Factor M’s most fiercely committed operatives and a dangerous psionic adversary capable of manipulating perception on a terrifying scale.

Background

[edit]

Carolyn Hyland grew up in a small Southern town where her parahuman abilities first manifested during adolescence. At first the incidents were subtle: strange visions, voices, and impossible sights experienced by people around her. As her powers developed, however, the illusions became increasingly vivid and difficult to control.

In a larger city, Carolyn might have found help or understanding.

Instead, her hometown interpreted her abilities as something unnatural and evil.

Rumors spread quickly. Religious hysteria followed. Her family became isolated, harassed, and increasingly feared by neighbors who had once known them for years. The situation escalated until one night an armed mob descended upon the Hyland home intending to kill them all.

Carolyn survived.

Her parents did not.

In the chaos and terror of the attack, Carolyn unleashed her powers instinctively, creating horrifying illusions that drove several members of the mob into panic and death. She escaped into the night and disappeared from the town forever.

The experience changed her permanently.

Factor M

[edit]

For years Carolyn lived as a fugitive, surviving through theft, deception, and constant movement. During this time she learned to use her powers more deliberately while also becoming deeply distrustful of ordinary society. Everywhere she went, she saw fear waiting just beneath the surface.

Eventually she encountered Claw, leader of Factor M. Unlike others, Claw did not pity her or fear her. He convinced Carolyn that what happened to her family was not an isolated incident, but part of a broader system of oppression directed at parahumans everywhere.

For the first time since her childhood, Carolyn felt she belonged somewhere.

She adopted the codename Halo and joined Factor M wholeheartedly.

Not long afterward, members of Factor M returned with her to the town that had murdered her parents. The confrontation ended catastrophically. By the time it was over, much of the town had been devastated.

Halo never expressed regret.

Powers

[edit]

Halo is an extremely powerful psionic illusionist.

  • Creation of realistic sensory illusions
  • Manipulation of perception and emotional responses
  • Ability to affect multiple minds simultaneously
  • Hallucinatory environments and false realities
  • Additional developing psionic abilities

Her illusions are so convincing that victims often struggle to distinguish them from reality even after the effects end.

Skills

[edit]

Years spent surviving alone and later training with Factor M turned Carolyn into a capable operative as well as a powerful psychic.

  • Combat training from Claw
  • Stealth and infiltration
  • Breaking and entering
  • Evasion and survival skills
  • Psychological manipulation

Halo combines street-level survival instincts with sophisticated psionic abilities, making her exceptionally dangerous in covert operations.

Personality

[edit]

Halo is intelligent, bitter, passionate, and deeply protective of other parahumans. Unlike some members of Factor M who view the conflict politically, Carolyn experiences it personally and emotionally. To her, anti-parahuman prejudice is not theoretical. It murdered her family and destroyed her childhood.

As a result, Halo often reacts harshly to perceived intolerance or hypocrisy. She has little patience for appeals to moderation from people she believes never faced the dangers she endured.

At the same time, she possesses a fierce loyalty toward those she considers her own people. Among fellow parahumans she can even seem warm, funny, and compassionate — a side of herself almost never visible to outsiders.

Legacy

[edit]

Halo became one of the defining psionic members of Factor M and one of the clearest examples of how fear and persecution helped radicalize many parahumans during the modern era. To supporters of Factor M, she is a survivor who fought back against hatred. To her enemies, she is proof that unchecked parahuman power inevitably leads to extremism and violence.

Both interpretations contain some truth.

Which is precisely what makes Halo so dangerous.
