Scarlet Samurai is the identity of Kenichi Oyama, a wandering mercenary swordsman who lives according to an idealized vision of the ancient samurai code in a world he considers spiritually bankrupt. Armed with advanced versions of traditional samurai weapons and armor, Oyama travels the globe as a modern-day ronin, selling his services while searching for purpose, worthy opponents, and a sense of honor he believes civilization abandoned long ago.
Though frequently classified as a supervillain due to his mercenary work and violent clashes with superheroes, Scarlet Samurai is not motivated by cruelty or conquest. He sees himself as a warrior born into the wrong century, trapped in an age of weak men, corporate greed, and meaningless violence.
The fact that he contributes to that violence rarely troubles him.
Early Life
[edit]Kenichi Oyama grew up immersed in Japanese history, martial traditions, and the philosophy of bushidō. From an early age he became fascinated by the romantic image of the samurai: disciplined warriors bound by honor, loyalty, and personal mastery.
Modern Japan disappointed him profoundly.
To Oyama, contemporary society seemed spiritually hollow — obsessed with commerce, comfort, and compromise rather than discipline or courage. He trained obsessively in traditional swordsmanship and martial arts, isolating himself increasingly from ordinary life.
Over time his admiration for samurai culture evolved into something harsher and more obsessive. Oyama no longer merely studied the past.
He wished he had lived in it.
Becoming The Scarlet Samurai
[edit]Rejecting modern identity almost entirely, Oyama adopted the name Scarlet Samurai and began wandering internationally as a mercenary swordsman and professional combatant. Like the masterless ronin of feudal Japan, he sold his skills where he chose while remaining loyal only to his personal code.
Unlike many assassins or mercenaries, however, Oyama imposed strict limits on his conduct. He refuses contracts he considers dishonorable, despises cruelty toward the helpless, and values personal combat skill above technological superiority or brute force.
This code has not stopped him from killing.
But it has occasionally placed him at odds with his own employers.
Conflicts With The Gauntlet
[edit]Scarlet Samurai became a recurring adversary of the Gauntlet, whose modern, pragmatic approach to heroism contrasts sharply with Oyama’s rigid warrior philosophy.
Their battles often resembled ideological duels as much as physical confrontations.
One of their most infamous encounters nearly ended in tragedy when Scarlet Samurai critically wounded Falcon, Gauntlet’s longtime partner. Though Oyama ultimately spared Falcon’s life, the incident deepened the hostility between him and the hero community.
Even so, many heroes privately admit that Scarlet Samurai behaves with more restraint and integrity than numerous officially sanctioned operatives.
A fact Oyama himself would probably find amusing.

Accordingly, he despises indiscriminate firearms and automated warfare.
Personality
[edit]Scarlet Samurai is disciplined, intelligent, formal, and deeply melancholic. He carries himself with quiet dignity and often speaks with the calm certainty of someone who believes modern civilization has fundamentally lost its way.
Yet beneath the composure lies bitterness.
Oyama envies the clarity of purpose he imagines ancient warriors possessed and resents living in an age where honor feels negotiable and violence is often hidden behind bureaucracy, politics, or machines.
Despite this cynicism, he remains capable of genuine respect and even compassion toward worthy opponents. He has occasionally aided heroes when circumstances aligned with his code.
He does not consider himself evil.
Merely faithful to principles the world abandoned.
Legacy
[edit]Scarlet Samurai became one of the most respected and dangerous martial mercenaries of the modern era, blending traditional samurai imagery with futuristic combat technology. His stories brought themes of honor, alienation, martial discipline, and cultural nostalgia into the Crucible Universe.
Kenichi Oyama believes he was born centuries too late.
The modern world, in his opinion, simply lacks the dignity to deserve warriors like him.
