“They look upon mankind the way a man might look upon bacteria that had suddenly begun speaking philosophy.”
— Mobius
The Hyperions are among the oldest and most mysterious beings known to exist within the cosmology of Earth-11717. To many civilizations they are worshipped as gods, feared as destroyers, or dismissed as myths invented to explain impossible events. Yet the Hyperions themselves appear largely indifferent to such distinctions. They neither seek worship nor deny it. They simply exist on a scale so vast that ordinary mortal minds struggle to comprehend them.
In the modern age, scholars, mystics, and cosmic explorers have increasingly come to regard the Hyperions as the closest thing the universe possesses to “space gods” — entities whose existence transcends biology, civilization, and even conventional reality itself.
Unlike traditional deities, the Hyperions do not rule heavens, answer prayers, or demand obedience. They are instead ancient intelligences who inhabit strata of existence beyond normal spacetime. Entire galaxies may rise and perish during what they perceive as moments of contemplation. Their thoughts can alter probability, ignite suns, or collapse dimensions unintentionally.
To humanity, the Hyperions often appear contradictory. Some have acted with compassion. Others have caused devastation merely by noticing a world’s existence. A few seem fascinated by lesser species, while others appear wholly incapable of understanding mortal life except in abstract terms.
For this reason, many cosmic philosophers compare humanity’s relationship to the Hyperions to that of microorganisms attempting to understand humanity itself.
The Nature of the Hyperions
[edit]No consensus exists regarding the Hyperions’ true origins. Competing theories abound among cosmic civilizations.
The scholars of Karnak claim the Hyperions are survivors of a previous universe that existed before the current cosmos formed. Certain occult traditions on Earth believe they are manifestations of archetypal thought generated by intelligent life across eternity. The mystics of the Hundred Worlds teach that the Hyperions are “dreamers outside the dream,” beings who observe reality from beyond creation itself.
Whatever their origin, the Hyperions do not appear to be a unified species in any biological sense. They are enormously varied in appearance, temperament, and power. Some manifest as towering armored figures wreathed in celestial fire. Others appear as living geometric abstractions, luminous giants, or impossible forms visible only through altered states of consciousness.
Many Hyperions seem capable of assuming physical avatars suitable for interaction with lesser beings. These incarnations are often mistaken for ordinary humanoids until their true nature becomes apparent.
Such manifestations are believed to represent only tiny fragments of the Hyperions’ true existence.
The Ancient Visitors
[edit]Evidence suggests the Hyperions have observed Earth intermittently for millions of years. Primitive humanity occasionally interpreted these encounters through the lens of mythology, resulting in legends of gods descending from the heavens, radiant messengers, giants, or divine wanderers.
Modern historians generally reject simplistic “ancient astronaut” theories that portray humanity as incapable of developing civilization independently. The Hyperions did not build the pyramids, teach agriculture, or create human culture. Humanity accomplished those things itself.
However, scattered encounters with Hyperions throughout history may have profoundly shaped mythology, religion, and folklore. Certain recurring symbols found across unrelated civilizations — radiant circles, burning stairways, celestial crowns, and “men of living light” — have led some researchers to speculate that humanity has glimpsed Hyperions many times without understanding what it witnessed.
PHASE II maintains classified archives concerning several apparent Hyperion encounters dating back thousands of years.
Incarnations Among Humanity
[edit]One of the most unsettling aspects of Hyperion behavior is their occasional tendency to incarnate themselves among mortal species.
The reasons for this remain unclear.
Some cosmic theorists believe Hyperions become curious about lesser lifeforms in the same way humans might study unusual microorganisms. Others argue these incarnations represent attempts to better understand individuality, mortality, or emotional experience.
Such incarnations are often unaware of their true nature at first. Many live apparently ordinary lives until moments of stress or revelation awaken impossible abilities and fragmented cosmic memories.
Several powerful metahumans throughout history are rumored to possess Hyperion ancestry or origins. In some cases this connection may explain otherwise inexplicable powers, especially among beings capable of manipulating spacetime, probability, or stellar energies.
The hero Starborn has long been suspected of possessing direct ties to the Hyperions, though he himself refuses to discuss the matter publicly.
The War in Heaven
[edit]Throughout cosmic history there have been rare periods when the Hyperions themselves have come into conflict.
These events are almost incomprehensible in scale.
Entire civilizations have vanished during struggles whose causes mortal minds could scarcely understand. Stars have reportedly gone dark overnight. Whole timelines have fractured and rewritten themselves. In some recorded incidents, survivors retained contradictory memories of reality afterward, suggesting portions of history itself had been altered.
Among occult scholars and cosmic historians, these catastrophes are collectively referred to as the Wars in Heaven.
Most civilizations survive such conflicts only by remaining unnoticed.
Curiously, humanity appears to have endured several such events without fully realizing what occurred. Certain historians suspect that many apparent “continuity changes” throughout history — vanished records, contradictory accounts, altered identities, and impossible historical discrepancies — may be residual effects of Hyperion conflicts reverberating through spacetime itself.
To most people on Earth, such changes simply become accepted as though reality had always been that way.
Relationship With Other Cosmic Powers
[edit]The Hyperions are feared even by many of the galaxy’s most advanced civilizations.
The Karnak Empire officially classifies them as Category Omega Existential Entities and forbids direct attempts at contact. The S'Taa regard them as manifestations of universal instability and seek to avoid regions associated with Hyperion activity entirely.
Certain mystical orders believe the Hyperions are connected to the mysterious Gate of Horn and Ivory and possibly even to the extradimensional force known as The Terror. Others violently reject this theory, arguing that the Hyperions, however incomprehensible, are still natural beings rather than entities of pure annihilation.
The truth remains unknown.
Modern Understanding
[edit]In the present day, knowledge of the Hyperions remains fragmentary even among Earth’s greatest minds.
PHASE II possesses only scattered intelligence reports, contradictory eyewitness testimony, and partially deciphered records recovered from alien ruins. The Nova Institute has attempted to classify Hyperion phenomena scientifically, though many researchers privately admit the subject borders more on metaphysics than physics.
To the public, the Hyperions remain little more than rumors whispered among conspiracy theorists, occultists, and certain superheroes who have glimpsed impossible things beyond the stars.
Yet among those who truly understand the scale of the cosmos, one fact is widely accepted:
Humanity does not live at the top of creation.
It lives beneath the notice of beings vast enough to mistake civilizations for dust.
