Kadavre is the undead remains of the Elizabethan alchemist Quintus Wingate, a man cursed with a grotesque and unending form of immortality after attempting to create an eternal life serum from the blood of Saracen. Neither truly alive nor capable of dying, Kadavre has endured centuries of decay, madness, and agony while pursuing revenge against the immortal wanderer he blames for his torment.
Over the centuries, Kadavre became one of the strangest and most horrifying recurring enemies faced by heroes across multiple eras.
The Alchemist
[edit]Quintus Wingate was born in sixteenth-century England during the height of Europe’s fascination with alchemy, occult philosophy, and forbidden sciences. Brilliant but obsessive, Wingate devoted his life to discovering the secret of immortality. He became convinced that legends surrounding the mysterious wanderer Saracen concealed the key to eternal life.
After years of study and experimentation, Wingate acquired samples of Saracen’s blood and used them in a final alchemical formula intended to transcend death itself.
The experiment succeeded.
Just not in the way he intended.
The Curse
[edit]Rather than granting true eternal youth, the serum trapped Wingate in a state of living death. His body ceased aging normally, but it also ceased properly healing or sustaining itself. Over the centuries his flesh decayed, his organs shriveled, and much of his body deteriorated into a skeletal, corpse-like form.
Yet no matter how badly he rotted, he could not die.
Fire, mutilation, dismemberment, even total bodily destruction merely triggered a horrific regenerative process through which Kadavre painfully reconstructed himself piece by piece. The process could take days, weeks, or longer depending on the severity of the damage, and each rebirth subjected him to unbearable agony.
Centuries of repeated death and resurrection slowly shattered Wingate’s sanity.
Enemy Of Saracen
[edit]Kadavre ultimately came to blame Saracen for his condition, seeing the immortal wanderer as the source of his endless suffering. Their feud persisted through multiple historical eras, with Kadavre repeatedly resurfacing to hunt or torment Saracen wherever he appeared.
Because Kadavre cannot truly die, these confrontations rarely ended permanently. Heroes who believed they had destroyed him often discovered years later that he had painfully reconstituted himself somewhere in secret.
Over time, Kadavre’s obsessions widened beyond Saracen alone. He became fascinated with immortality, undeath, and the boundary between life and death, bringing him into conflict with occult investigators, supernatural heroes, and modern adventurers alike.
Powers

Though seemingly impossible to destroy permanently, Kadavre’s regeneration process is excruciatingly painful, a fact that has contributed heavily to his madness.

Despite surviving into the modern era, Kadavre rejects much modern technology and prefers older methods, tools, and environments whenever possible.
Personality
[edit]Kadavre is bitter, theatrical, unstable, and consumed by centuries of suffering. Unlike many immortal beings who grow detached from humanity, Wingate became trapped in a permanent cycle of pain, resentment, and decay. Every apparent death simply renews his torment.
As a result, he often swings unpredictably between cold intellectual brilliance and near-animal rage.
At times Kadavre can even seem pitiable. Beneath the monstrous exterior remains the shattered remnant of a man who once sought eternal life out of fear of mortality and whose wish became a nightmare beyond imagining.
His greatest terror is not death.
It is continuing.
Legacy
[edit]Kadavre became one of the major supernatural horror villains spanning the Silver, Bronze, and Modern Ages. His grotesque appearance, tragic immortality, and endless vendetta against Saracen made him a uniquely enduring presence within the Crucible Universe.
Unlike vampires or ghosts, Kadavre represents something far crueler than death.
He represents what happens when death refuses to finish its work.
