Black Sun was the terrorist identity adopted by Lucius Gray, a powerful parahuman who began his career as one of the great heroes of the Silver Age before becoming one of its most tragic villains. Originally celebrated as the radiant superhero Sunbolt and founding member of the Crusaders, Gray’s growing rage over the persecution of parahumans drove him toward extremism, violence, and eventually outright terrorism.
His fall changed the course of superhuman history.
Sunbolt
[edit]Lucius Gray emerged during the early Silver Age as one of the most admired young heroes of his generation. A gifted physicist and powerful parahuman capable of manipulating light, heat, and radiation, Gray adopted the heroic identity of Sunbolt and quickly became a public symbol of optimism and scientific progress.
Together with the legendary hero Mentor, he helped found the Crusaders, one of the defining superhero teams of the era. Charismatic, brilliant, and visually spectacular in battle, Sunbolt embodied the Silver Age ideal of the superhuman as protector and inspiration.
For a time, he genuinely believed humanity and parahumans could coexist peacefully.
History proved otherwise.
The Parahuman Persecutions
[edit]As fear of parahumans intensified during the Silver Age, governments and institutions across the world increasingly targeted superhuman individuals with surveillance, discrimination, detention policies, and outright violence. Gray witnessed growing hostility toward people like himself even while serving publicly as a hero.
The contradiction poisoned him.
Over time, Lucius Gray became convinced that peaceful coexistence was impossible and that humanity would ultimately destroy parahumans unless forced to submit. His rhetoric grew harsher, his methods more ruthless, and his relationships with former allies increasingly strained.
Eventually he abandoned the identity of Sunbolt entirely.
He renamed himself Black Sun.
The choice was deliberate.
If the world insisted on treating him as a monster, then he would become one.
Terrorist And Revolutionary
[edit]As Black Sun, Gray became one of the most dangerous superhuman extremists of the late Silver and Bronze Ages. Using his immense powers, scientific genius, and public notoriety, he launched a campaign of attacks intended to force recognition of parahuman rights through fear and overwhelming force.
To supporters, Black Sun was a revolutionary driven to desperate measures by persecution.
To the world at large, he became a terrorist.
Black Sun’s operations ranged from attacks on anti-parahuman institutions to mass acts of intimidation and catastrophic energy assaults that left entire regions devastated. His conflict with former teammates in the Crusaders became one of the defining tragedies of the era.
His ideology would later inspire more radical organizations such as Factor M, who viewed Black Sun as both martyr and prophet.
The Hero Wars
[edit]During the Hero Wars, Black Sun became infected by the mutagenic virus that devastated much of the superhuman community. As his condition deteriorated, the years of rage and violence that had consumed him finally gave way to remorse.
Near the end of his life, Lucius Gray openly admitted regret for many of the atrocities he had committed.
Though he never abandoned his belief that parahumans had suffered injustice, he came to understand that terror and hatred had transformed him into something far removed from the hero he once wanted to be.
He died hoping history — and perhaps his children — might someday forgive him.
Powers

Yet even at his worst, traces of the original Lucius Gray remained visible. He was never driven purely by greed or cruelty. His violence emerged from despair, rage, and a genuine belief that his people faced extinction.
That complexity made him both terrifying and tragic.
Legacy
[edit]Black Sun remains one of the most consequential figures in superhuman history. His transformation from beloved Silver Age icon to feared terrorist permanently altered public attitudes toward parahumans and helped define the political tensions that shaped later generations.
To some, he was a monster. To others, a warning. To still others, a martyr.
But almost everyone agrees on one thing: Lucius Gray’s fall marked the end of innocence for the Silver Age.
