Mirage is the criminal identity of Danielle D'Ville, a powerful parahuman capable of entering, manipulating, and creating dreams within the minds of others. Though theoretically capable of producing comforting fantasies or harmless illusions, Mirage instead became infamous for weaponizing fear itself, crafting elaborate nightmares so vivid and psychologically devastating that some victims never recovered from them.
Others never woke up at all.
Early Life
[edit]Danielle D'Ville’s powers manifested early in childhood and quickly transformed her family life into a waking horror.
Unlike more visible parahuman abilities, Danielle’s gifts operated invisibly and intimately. Family members began suffering terrifying nightmares, hallucinations, insomnia, panic attacks, and psychological breakdowns whenever she became angry, frightened, or emotionally unstable. Doctors and therapists failed to understand the phenomenon, while Danielle herself rapidly discovered she enjoyed the fear she inspired.
Especially the control it gave her.
As she matured, Danielle learned to direct her abilities deliberately, invading the dreams of classmates, neighbors, and eventually strangers. What began as childish cruelty evolved into calculated psychological manipulation.
Her family eventually disowned her completely.
By then, Danielle no longer cared.
Rise To Wealth
[edit]Mirage discovered quickly that fear could be monetized as easily as violence.
Using her abilities for extortion, blackmail, coercion, and psychological domination, she accumulated wealth while leaving little physical evidence behind. Rivals suffered nervous collapses. Businessmen signed away fortunes after weeks without sleep. Enemies found themselves haunted nightly by increasingly horrifying visions tailored perfectly to their deepest fears.
Danielle proved particularly skilled at exploiting guilt, shame, and buried trauma.
She considered ordinary crime unimaginative.
Why rob someone directly when you could simply make them desperate to obey?
Murder Of Her Family
[edit]The final break with her humanity reportedly came when Mirage turned her powers fully against her estranged family. Over an extended period, she subjected them to relentless recurring nightmares so vivid and emotionally devastating that several eventually died from stress-related complications, psychological collapse, or apparent suicide.
Authorities never proved her involvement.
Very few investigators even understood such a thing was possible.
Mirage herself later referred to the killings as “closure.”
The Lawgivers
[edit]Mirage eventually attracted the attention of Slayer, who recognized both the strategic value and sheer cruelty of her abilities. She was recruited into the Lawgivers, where her powers made her uniquely effective for interrogation, psychological warfare, intimidation, and assassination.
Among the Lawgivers, Mirage became feared even by allies.
Because unlike most villains, she rarely attacked the body first.
She attacked the mind.
Powers

Unlike impulsive killers, Mirage prefers slow emotional destruction.
She is patient enough to dismantle a person’s sanity over weeks or months if properly motivated.
At the same time, Danielle maintains an outwardly sophisticated and composed demeanor. Wealth, beauty, luxury, and emotional control matter deeply to her. She despises weakness, dependency, and sentimentality — perhaps because her own powers isolated her emotionally from childhood onward.
Some psychologists believe Mirage long ago lost the ability to distinguish genuine intimacy from manipulation.
Legacy
[edit]Mirage became one of the most psychologically disturbing villains of the modern era and a recurring enemy of Watchstar and other heroes confronting psionic threats. Her stories explored fear, trauma, dream logic, emotional abuse, and the terrifying vulnerability of the human subconscious.
Because most people believe nightmares end when they wake up.
Mirage knows better.
