“Heroes need someone who knows which wire to cut and when to keep his mouth shut.”
— Oz Traynor
Background
[edit]Oswald “Oz” Traynor is a military veteran and longtime associate of Cyrus Kempf, having served alongside him in the same ranger unit during a deeply unpopular war. The two men developed a close professional bond under brutal combat conditions, where Oz distinguished himself through technical expertise, reliability, and calmness under fire.
Years after returning to civilian life, Oz’s personal struggles eventually led him into serious trouble. A compulsive gambler with catastrophically bad luck, he accumulated dangerous debts to criminal organizations and found himself marked for execution by the assassin Cheapshot.
Oz survived only because Manhunter and Mistral intervened.
Grateful for the rescue and seeking some form of redemption, Oz offered his services to The Night Shift as technical support coordinator and field operations specialist. From behind the scenes, he monitors communications, tracks tactical developments, manages electronic surveillance, and provides backup support during the team’s operations.
Oz is also a recovering alcoholic, approaching recovery with the same grim determination he applies to everything else: one day at a time.
Skills And Expertise
[edit]Oz is a highly trained electronics warfare specialist with extensive experience in communications interception, security systems, surveillance technology, and tactical support operations.
He is also an expert mechanic capable of maintaining and improvising repairs on a wide range of vehicles and equipment.
His military background includes extensive familiarity with firearms, explosives, and advanced weapon systems, and he remains an exceptionally capable marksman, particularly with sniper rifles.
Unfortunately, Oz is also an objectively terrible gambler.
Personality
[edit]Oz is practical, dryly humorous, loyal, and quietly self-destructive beneath the surface. Years of war, addiction, and bad decisions have left him deeply cynical, though he retains a strong moral core and genuine loyalty toward the people he trusts.
He is especially protective of his young daughter, Tenisha, who represents one of the few stable and hopeful elements in his life.
Notes
[edit]Oz Traynor became one of the core civilian support figures in THE NIGHT SHIFT, helping establish the grounded tactical and street-level atmosphere that distinguished the series from more traditional superhero titles.
