The Snipe

The Snipe is the masked criminal identity of Archer Lang, a disgraced competitive marksman who turned his extraordinary skill with ranged weapons into a campaign of revenge against the wealthy, powerful, and respectable citizens he blamed for his ruin. Operating from hidden perches high above Unity City, the Snipe became one of the more elegant and elusive Silver Age rogues associated with the Unity League and the Amazing Ape.

Archer Lang

[edit]

Archer Lang was once among the finest competitive marksmen in the world, celebrated for his precision, composure, and mastery of old-fashioned ranged weapons. Though capable with firearms, Lang always preferred bows, crossbows, throwing weapons, and other tools that required discipline rather than machinery. He considered marksmanship an art of patience, breath, calculation, and nerve.

His career ended after a public cheating scandal at a major tournament. Lang insisted the accusations were false, but the judgment destroyed his reputation regardless. Sponsors withdrew, rivals turned away, and the sporting world that had once praised his skill now treated him as a fraud.

Whether Lang was truly innocent remains disputed, but he believed absolutely that he had been framed by jealous rivals and protected elites.

Becoming The Snipe

[edit]

Humiliated and increasingly bitter, Lang vanished from public life and re-emerged in Unity City as the Snipe. Wearing a mask, cape, and specialized gliding harness, he began a series of spectacular crimes aimed at prominent socialites, financiers, sporting officials, and influential figures connected, however loosely, to his disgrace.

The Snipe’s crimes were theatrical but controlled. He favored impossible shots, cryptic warnings, and symbolic targets, often striking from extraordinary distances before escaping across rooftops and air currents. His chosen name reflected both his sniping precision and his habit of appearing suddenly from unexpected directions, like a hidden bird flushed from cover.

Methods

[edit]

The Snipe prefers ambush, misdirection, and vertical mobility rather than direct confrontation. From high rooftops, bell towers, penthouses, and the upper levels of Unity City’s tallest buildings, he studies targets for days before acting.

His weapons include:

  • custom crossbows
  • trick bolts
  • weighted throwing darts
  • grapnel lines
  • smoke and flash projectiles
  • cutting wires
  • compact ranged devices of his own design

Though not superhuman, Lang’s accuracy can seem almost impossible. He is capable of striking tiny targets at extreme range, disabling machinery with a single bolt, or pinning a foe’s clothing to a wall without drawing blood.

When he chooses to draw blood, he rarely misses.

The Gliding Cape

[edit]

The Snipe’s cape is more than costume. It incorporates a lightweight gliding framework that allows him to ride air currents between buildings and descend silently from high perches. While it does not grant true flight, it gives him extraordinary mobility across the Unity City skyline and makes pursuit difficult for ground-bound opponents.

The cape also reinforces his chosen image: not merely a marksman, but a dark bird of prey haunting the city’s upper reaches.

Skills

[edit]

The Snipe is a master of ranged combat in nearly all forms, especially traditional and archaic weapons. His known skills include:

  • archery
  • crossbow marksmanship
  • trick shooting
  • thrown weapons
  • rooftop movement
  • stealth
  • ambush planning
  • escape routes and evasion

He is also a careful planner with a strong sense of dramatic timing, though his pride often leads him to leave clues or warnings when simple silence would serve him better.

Personality

[edit]

Archer Lang is proud, wounded, meticulous, and obsessed with vindication. He regards himself as a wronged gentleman rather than a common criminal, and this self-image shapes nearly everything he does. He despises cheats, hypocrites, and corrupt elites, though his own crimes have long since exceeded any reasonable claim of justice.

Unlike many Silver Age villains, the Snipe retains a certain personal code. He prefers not to harm bystanders, admires courage in opponents, and is capable of showing restraint when an enemy behaves honorably. This does not make him safe. It only means that his vanity and sense of grievance are wrapped in old-fashioned manners.

Enemy Of The Amazing Ape

[edit]

The Snipe first came to public attention during his clashes with the so-called Amazing Ape, Dr. Renfield Watts, whose intelligence and physical agility made him an unusually difficult opponent. The contrast between Lang’s aristocratic precision and the Ape’s startling unpredictability became a recurring feature of their encounters.

The Snipe also crossed paths with the Unity League, usually when his schemes threatened larger public events or powerful figures under the League’s protection.

Legacy

[edit]

The Snipe became one of Unity City’s classic Silver Age rogues, combining gentleman-thief affectations, rooftop adventure, trick weapons, and wounded pride into a distinctive recurring villain. He is not the strongest or most destructive enemy in the city’s history, but few can match his patience, precision, or talent for turning a skyline into a shooting gallery.
