“He turned sound into power. I’m going to turn it into answers.”
— Soundwave II
Soundwave II is the current bearer of the Soundwave mantle, the heroic identity of Dr. Declan Black, a physicist who has carried forward—and expanded—the legacy of his father, Dr. Duncan Black. A member of Watchstar, Declan combines advanced sonic science with a personal mission that has yet to reach its conclusion.
Background
[edit]Declan Black grew up in the shadow of brilliance. His father’s work in sonic physics defined an entire field, and the expectations surrounding that legacy were considerable. Rather than resist them, Declan absorbed them, developing his own expertise in acoustics and wave dynamics with a focus that paralleled—and eventually rivaled—that of the elder Black.
The defining moment of his life came not through discovery, but through loss. The death of Duncan Black in a laboratory accident left unanswered questions that did not sit easily with him. The official explanation was accepted by some.
Declan was not among them.
Taking The Mantle
[edit]In the aftermath, Declan chose not only to continue his father’s work, but to assume his identity. Adopting the name Soundwave, he re-engineered the original sonic suit, refining its systems and extending its capabilities through modern advances in materials science and signal processing.
The suit became more than a tool.
It became a statement.
The Investigation
[edit]Declan’s work as Soundwave II is driven in part by an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding his father’s death. While no definitive evidence has emerged to contradict the official account, inconsistencies remain—details that suggest the possibility of interference rather than accident.
His search is methodical.
He is in no hurry to reach the wrong conclusion.
Watchstar
[edit]Recognizing both his capability and his potential, Seeker recruited Declan into the current incarnation of Watchstar. Within the team, Soundwave II serves as both technical specialist and field operative, applying his knowledge to situations that require precision as much as power.
His presence reflects continuity.
His approach reflects change.
Powers
[edit]Soundwave II possesses no innate superhuman abilities.
His effectiveness derives entirely from his technology.
Skills
[edit]Declan Black’s expertise spans both science and performance.
- Advanced physicist specializing in acoustics and wave behavior
- Engineer and designer of next-generation sonic systems
- Skilled guitarist and bandleader, translating technical understanding into musical expression
His work bridges analysis and creativity.
Technology
[edit]The updated sonic suit incorporates improvements over the original design.
- Enhanced sonic projection systems with greater range and control
- Refined defensive capabilities using vibrational shielding
- Improved energy efficiency and adaptability in varied environments
The suit reflects both inheritance and innovation.
Personality
[edit]Declan Black is thoughtful, deliberate, and quietly driven. Where his father applied science to immediate action, Declan balances application with inquiry, seeking to understand not only how systems function, but why events unfold as they do.
His pursuit of answers does not interfere with his responsibilities.
It informs them.
Reputation
[edit]Within Watchstar, Soundwave II is regarded as a reliable and capable member whose technical insight often shapes mission outcomes. In the broader scientific community, he is recognized as a leading figure in his field, continuing and expanding upon foundational work.
Among those familiar with the elder Soundwave, comparisons are inevitable.
They are not unwarranted.
Legacy
[edit]Soundwave II embodies the continuation of a legacy that is both scientific and personal. By taking up his father’s mantle, Declan has ensured that the work—and the questions—associated with that identity remain active forces in the present.
He carries the past forward.
He intends to finish what it began.
