Stormbringer:Law And Chaos
Law and Chaos
[edit]The world of the Young Kingdoms is not divided between good and evil. It is divided between Law and Chaos—and held, precariously, between them by the unseen hand of the Balance.
These are not mere philosophies, nor the creeds of rival priesthoods. They are the fundamental principles of existence itself, older than empires, older than gods, older perhaps than the world.
Mortals do not choose between them lightly. Most never truly understand that they have chosen at all.
Law
[edit]Law is order, structure, permanence.
It is the force that binds the world into something stable and knowable. Under Law, things endure. Kingdoms persist. Promises hold. The shape of the world resists change.
Those who serve Law speak of:
- Justice
- Civilization
- Hierarchy
- Truth
Yet Law is not mercy.
Taken to its extreme, Law becomes:
- Rigidity without compassion
- Order without freedom
- Perfection without life
A world wholly given to Law would be unchanging, eternal—and utterly still. Nothing would grow. Nothing would surprise. Nothing would live in any meaningful sense.
The champions of Law, such as Vilmir, see themselves as guardians of civilization. They are not wrong.
But neither are they entirely right.
Chaos
[edit]Chaos is change, passion, transformation.
It is the force that drives creation and destruction alike. Under Chaos, the world is alive—unpredictable, dangerous, and full of possibility.
Those who serve Chaos speak of:
- Freedom
- Power
- Desire
- Becoming
Yet Chaos is not liberation alone.
Taken to its extreme, Chaos becomes:
- Destruction without purpose
- Change without continuity
- Power without restraint
A world wholly given to Chaos would burn itself out in moments—reborn and destroyed in endless frenzy, never settling, never enduring.
The rulers of Pan Tang embrace this truth openly. They do not fear Chaos.
They wield it.
The Cosmic Conflict
[edit]Law and Chaos are not at peace.
They are locked in a struggle that defines all existence.
- Each seeks dominance
- Each shapes the world through its servants
- Each uses mortals, knowingly or not, as instruments
This conflict is not always visible. It is fought:
- In wars between nations
- In the rise and fall of empires
- In the quiet choices of individuals
A treaty signed, a city burned, a demon summoned, a law upheld—all of these are moves in a game far older than humanity.
No kingdom stands entirely apart from it.
Not even those who believe themselves neutral.
The Cosmic Balance
[edit]
Between Law and Chaos lies the Balance.
It is not a third force, but a principle—a necessity.
The Balance does not seek victory. It seekscontinuance.
Where Law would freeze the world into lifeless perfection, and Chaos would tear it apart in endless change, the Balance ensures that:
- The world endures
- Change and stability coexist
- Existence remains possible
Those who serve the Balance are rare, and often misunderstood.
They may:
- Aid Law in one moment
- Aid Chaos in another
- Oppose both when either grows too strong
To outsiders, this appears inconsistent, even treacherous.
In truth, it is the only path that preserves the world.
Mortals And The Eternal Struggle
[edit]Most people do not name these forces.
They speak instead of:
- Gods
- Fate
- Fortune
- Destiny
Yet their lives are shaped by Law and Chaos all the same.
- A rigid empire enforcing order serves Law
- A cult summoning demons serves Chaos
- A wanderer choosing neither may unknowingly serve the Balance
Even the greatest figures—emperors, sorcerers, conquerors—are not masters of these forces.
They are touched by them.
Used by them.
Sometimes destroyed by them.
Final Truth
[edit]There is no final victory.
If Law triumphs completely, the world becomes a perfect prison.
If Chaos triumphs completely, the world ceases to be.
Only the Balance allows the story to continue.
And so the struggle endures—age after age, empire after empire—unseen by most, undeniable to those who have glimpsed its truth.
The wise do not ask which side will win.
They ask only how long the Balance can hold.
