Real Name: Sarah Augustyn

Background: At a young age, Sarah Augustyn was kidnapped from her own home and her family was killed by agents of HAVOC, who had determined she had a high psychic potential and could be used as a psychic weapon. Sarah was forcibly trained by her captors and her psionic powers were augmented by HAVOC scientists by a series of extremely painful and humiliating treatments. She was also intentionally addicted to drugs to make it harder for her to escape.  HAVOC tried to set her to work against their foes, but the former hero Alpha found out about their plans. As Alpha was also part of a HAVOC project that attempted to turn her into a weapon during the Bronze Age, she had kept close tabs on the scientists involved. With Watchstar's assistance, Alpha rescued Sarah.

Sarah was furious at the months, even years of torments she had suffered at HAVOC's hands. Always having a temper, she wanted to use her powers to remotely execute each of the scientists who had subjected her to the treatments. Alpha convinced her to relent and to help track them all down, instead. This Sarah did, and Watchstar captured every one of them.

— Ember

Ember is the codename of Sarah Augustyn, a powerful psionic whose abilities were discovered, exploited, and brutally enhanced by HAVOC before she escaped their control. Forged through trauma and discipline, she has become both a formidable telepath and a determined protector, now serving as a member of the Corsairs.

Origin

[edit]

Sarah Augustyn’s life was irrevocably altered at a young age when she was abducted from her home by agents of HAVOC. Identified as possessing unusually high psychic potential, she was taken as part of a program designed to weaponize human psionics.

Her family was killed during the abduction.

Within HAVOC’s facilities, Sarah endured extensive conditioning. Her powers were forcibly expanded through a series of invasive and often painful procedures, while psychological pressure and chemical dependency were used to maintain control. The intent was clear: to create a psychic weapon that could be deployed at will.

Sarah resisted.

Rescue

[edit]

HAVOC’s plans did not go unnoticed. Alpha, herself a survivor of a similar program, had been monitoring the scientists involved. Recognizing the danger, she coordinated with Watchstar to locate and extract Sarah.

The rescue was successful.

What followed was more complicated.

Reckoning

[edit]

Freed from captivity, Sarah was consumed by anger. The extent of what had been done to her—and the loss she had suffered—left her determined to use her powers to eliminate those responsible. Her abilities made that possibility very real.

Alpha intervened.

Drawing on her own experience, she persuaded Sarah to take a different path: not execution, but justice. Together with Watchstar, Sarah helped track down every individual involved in the program. Each was captured and brought to account.

The decision marked a turning point.

Becoming Ember

[edit]

Rather than withdraw, Sarah chose to act. Taking the name Ember, she began using her abilities to help others, particularly those who could not defend themselves against hidden or systemic threats.

Her work eventually led to recruitment by the Corsairs, where her abilities and experience made her a valuable member of the team.

Powers

[edit]

Ember’s psionic abilities are both extensive and highly refined.

 • Long-Range Telepathy – Can read and sense minds across vast distances
 • Psychic Tracking – Able to identify and follow the unique “signature” of individual minds
 • Mental Awareness – Continuous perception of nearby and distant consciousness
 • Precise Control – Fine manipulation of her abilities without collateral impact

Her power is defined not only by scope, but by accuracy.

Skills

[edit]

Beyond her psionics, Sarah possesses significant physical and mental conditioning.

 • Enhanced athletic capability from HAVOC augmentations
 • High tolerance for stress and extreme conditions
 • Experience operating in hostile environments
 • Pursuit of high-risk activities such as scuba diving and parachuting

These activities serve both as training and as a means of reclaiming control over her life.

Personality

[edit]

Ember is intense, direct, and emotionally grounded in hard experience. Her temper remains a defining trait, but it is no longer unchecked. She has learned to channel anger into focus, though the underlying emotions have not disappeared.

She does not forget what was done to her.

She chooses what to do with it.

Reputation

[edit]

Among her teammates in the Corsairs, Ember is respected for both her power and her resolve. Those aware of her past understand the discipline required for her to operate as she does.

To her enemies, she is something else entirely: a mind that cannot be hidden from.

Legacy

[edit]

Ember’s story is one of survival and choice. Created to be a weapon, she rejected that role and redefined it on her own terms. Her existence stands as a counterpoint to those who would exploit power without regard for the individual who bears it.

She remembers everything.

And she moves forward anyway.
