Diehard is the mercenary identity of Derec Carver, a genetically enhanced supersoldier whose extraordinary recuperative abilities make him one of the most physically relentless combatants in the modern superhuman world. Trained from youth for warfare and covert operations, Diehard built a long criminal career as a mercenary and assassin before eventually being imprisoned in Vulture Island Correctional Facility.

Background

[edit]

Derec Carver and his brother Slayer were products of a covert supersoldier initiative conducted by an unidentified foreign government. From an early age, the brothers were subjected to extreme physical conditioning, combat training, and biological enhancement programs designed to create elite human weapons capable of operating beyond normal military limits.

The program succeeded.

Too well.

Both brothers emerged as extraordinarily dangerous operatives, possessing enhanced physical capabilities and psychological conditioning suited for covert warfare. However, like many supersoldier projects, the program eventually lost control of its creations. Rather than continue serving as expendable state assets, the brothers disappeared into the international mercenary underground.

There, their training became highly profitable.

Mercenary Career

[edit]

Diehard first achieved major notoriety while working for Lazarus X during his campaign against CounterForce. His frightening ability to absorb punishment and continue fighting made him a terrifying battlefield opponent. Heroes and law enforcement officers quickly learned that injuries which would disable or kill ordinary people often barely slowed him down.

Over time, Diehard established himself as a freelance mercenary willing to work for terrorist groups, criminal syndicates, rogue governments, or anyone else capable of meeting his price. His career repeatedly brought him into conflict with superheroes, particularly Rebel, with whom he developed a long-standing personal rivalry.

Unlike many superhuman villains, Diehard possesses little interest in conquest, ideology, or theatricality. Combat itself appears to be the closest thing he has to purpose.

Powers

[edit]

Diehard’s body possesses extraordinary regenerative and recuperative capabilities.

  • Rapid recovery from injuries
  • Enhanced physical resilience and stamina
  • Ability to continue functioning through extreme trauma
  • Accelerated healing compared to normal humans

Though not truly immortal, he is notoriously difficult to incapacitate permanently.

Skills

[edit]

Diehard is an elite combat operative with extensive military-style training.

  • Master-level hand-to-hand combatant
  • Expert acrobat and physical fighter
  • Trained in covert operations and battlefield tactics
  • Skilled with a wide variety of weapons

His fighting style emphasizes relentless aggression and physical intimidation.

Technology

[edit]

Though comfortable with firearms and military hardware, Diehard favors close combat.

  • Combat-hardened quarterstaff used as his signature weapon
  • Access to various firearms and combat weapons
  • Reinforced tactical armor and mercenary equipment when needed

He often prefers weapons that allow him to exploit his superior endurance in prolonged fights.

Personality

[edit]

Diehard is hard, cynical, and emotionally detached, shaped by a lifetime of violence and conditioning. He approaches combat with an almost casual brutality, rarely displaying panic or hesitation even under overwhelming circumstances.

Unlike his brother Slayer, whose violence can seem cold and calculated, Diehard often appears to genuinely enjoy testing himself against dangerous opponents. Pain means very little to him, either physically or emotionally, and this gives him an unnerving fearlessness in battle.

At the same time, there are hints that years of engineered violence have left him profoundly hollow beneath the surface.

Incarceration

[edit]

Following numerous conflicts with superheroes and international authorities, Diehard was eventually captured and imprisoned at Vulture Island Correctional Facility, one of the world’s primary holding sites for dangerous super-criminals.

Security personnel reportedly consider him one of the prison’s most difficult inmates to contain due to his healing abilities and combat skill.

Legacy

[edit]

Diehard became one of the defining mercenary villains of the modern era, feared less for elaborate schemes than for his sheer physical persistence. Heroes who fought him often described the experience less as battling a man than trying to stop an avalanche that simply refused to stay down.

Most criminals fear getting hurt.

Diehard fears running out of enemies first.
