Dr. Saturn and Atomboy were among the defining heroes of the Silver Age, a partnership that combined scientific ingenuity with raw superhuman power. Together, Dr. Judson Jerome and his adopted son Kent Wylie stood at the forefront of a generation that believed technology, courage, and determination could overcome any threat.
Their careers spanned decades and continents, ending in a final confrontation that marked the close of an era.
Origins
[edit]Dr. Judson Jerome was a pioneering scientist whose most famous discovery was saturnium, a remarkable alloy with properties that allowed it to manipulate gravity. Using this material, he constructed a suit of armor that enabled flight, enhanced durability, and a range of other capabilities. Taking the name Dr. Saturn, he became one of the earliest “science heroes,” applying invention directly to crimefighting.
Kent Wylie’s origin was more accidental. A young orphan, he was exposed to radionic radiation from an experimental nuclear pile. The incident transformed him, granting him superhuman strength, speed, and the ability to fly and project atomic energy. Dr. Jerome took the boy in, becoming both mentor and father figure. Under his guidance, Kent adopted the name Atomboy.
Silver Age Heroes
[edit]As a team, Dr. Saturn and Atomboy became widely known for their campaigns against criminal organizations, rogue scientists, and geopolitical threats. Their work often intersected with the activities of PHASE II, with whom they maintained a close alliance. They were also frequent adversaries of HAVOC, thwarting numerous schemes that might otherwise have had global consequences.
Operating out of the Orion Observatory in Pacific City, they served as both protectors and symbols of a particular vision of heroism—one grounded in optimism about science and progress. Their adventures took them across the globe, reflecting both the scale of the threats they faced and the reach of their influence.
Family And Legacy
[edit]Dr. Jerome’s personal life was not entirely separate from his work. His daughter, Janie Saturn, often found herself drawn into adventures of her own, frequently without her father’s knowledge. Her activities would later become part of the broader legacy associated with the Saturn name.
Kent Wylie, for his part, grew from a reckless youth into a capable and courageous hero, shaped as much by Jerome’s guidance as by his own experiences in the field.
Final Mission
[edit]During the Bronze Age, after many years of heroism, Dr. Saturn and Atomboy undertook what would become their final mission. Pursuing the emerging supervillain Sargon to a hidden base on Mount Everest, they engaged him in a confrontation that proved fatal.
Sargon disintegrated both heroes.
Their deaths marked the end of a defining chapter in heroic history and had far-reaching consequences. The loss was a key factor in motivating Dr. Nathaniel Nova to establish the Sentries, a new organization intended to address threats on a similar scale.
