Gizmo is the criminal alias of Elmo Calhoun, a brilliant inventor, computer scientist, and master technician whose shifting loyalties and genius for sabotage made him one of the most dangerous technical operatives of the modern age. Though once publicly associated with the superhero team Watchstar West, Calhoun secretly served as a spy and saboteur for the criminal organization MEK before eventually becoming involved with the government-controlled team known as the Corsairs.
Background
[edit]Elmo Calhoun first gained public attention as an eccentric but invaluable technical support specialist attached to Watchstar West. Cheerful, quick-witted, and seemingly harmless, Calhoun maintained the team’s vehicles, communications systems, weapons platforms, and experimental technology while cultivating the image of an overenthusiastic gadgeteer more interested in machines than politics.
Much of that image was carefully constructed.
Unknown to Watchstar West, Calhoun was secretly working for MEK, the technologically driven criminal organization dedicated to advancing its own vision of machine-dominated global order. Acting as an embedded operative, Gizmo fed intelligence to MEK while quietly compromising systems and studying the team’s internal operations.
For years, no one suspected him.
Betrayal Of Watchstar West
[edit]Calhoun’s betrayal finally emerged during one of the darkest crises in Watchstar West’s history. Exploiting hidden vulnerabilities within the cybernetic programming of Cobra, Gizmo turned the team’s own leader against them and triggered a catastrophic internal conflict.
The resulting battle nearly destroyed the team.
Though Gizmo escaped in the aftermath, the betrayal devastated Watchstar West and permanently altered how superhero teams approached technological security and cybernetic integration.
Eventually, however, Calhoun was tracked down and captured by Doctor Data, whose own technological expertise finally proved capable of countering Gizmo’s elaborate defenses and escape systems.
The Corsairs
[edit]Despite the scale of his crimes, Calhoun served only a relatively short prison sentence. His extraordinary technical abilities made him too valuable for several government agencies to ignore. Eventually, Enforcer arranged for Gizmo to receive a conditional pardon in exchange for service with the government-backed operations team known as the Corsairs.
The arrangement was controversial from the beginning.
Some regarded Calhoun as a rehabilitated asset whose skills could serve legitimate causes. Others believed he simply shifted loyalties whenever it suited his survival or curiosity.
History has generally supported the second interpretation.

Personality
[edit]Calhoun is charming, sarcastic, intellectually restless, and profoundly untrustworthy. He views morality as negotiable and loyalty as conditional, valuing cleverness and technical achievement above ideology or ethics. To Gizmo, systems exist to be explored, manipulated, and improved — whether those systems are computers, governments, or superhero teams.
Despite this, he is not entirely nihilistic. Calhoun genuinely admires intelligence, creativity, and technical excellence, even in his enemies. He also possesses an almost childlike enthusiasm for invention that occasionally makes people forget how dangerous he truly is.
Usually right before he betrays them.
Legacy
[edit]Gizmo became one of the defining technological traitors of the modern heroic era, remembered especially for his infiltration and betrayal of Watchstar West. His career helped establish the recurring Crucible theme that advanced technology can be as dangerous internally as externally.
Because the deadliest weapon in a superhero headquarters is sometimes not the giant robot outside the gates.
Sometimes it is the guy who built the security system.
