Viceroy is the heroic identity of John Mackey, a human abducted in infancy and transformed by the Karnak Empire into one of its greatest warriors. A being of immense cosmic power—often described as a living star—he is one of the most formidable heroes in the setting.
Background
[edit]John Mackey was taken from Earth as an infant by the Karnak Empire and subjected to extensive genetic experimentation. The process transformed him into a Karnak starflyer—an elite class of warriors capable of surviving in space and wielding vast energetic power.
Raised within the Empire, Mackey’s strength, resilience, and indomitable will set him apart. Rather than breaking him, the process refined him. His spirit impressed even the Karnak Emperor, who granted him the title of Viceroy—Imperial Governor of a sector of space that included Earth itself.
But Mackey never fully accepted the Karnak philosophy of conquest.
In time, he rebelled.
Career

Returning to Earth, Viceroy became one of its greatest defenders, using the power given to him by the Karnak to oppose tyranny—both terrestrial and cosmic.
For a time, he served with the Unity League, where his immense power made him a central figure in major conflicts. However, his volatile temperament and uncompromising worldview often put him at odds with teammates.
Most notably, he developed a fierce rivalry with Protector. Their conflict escalated into a legendary battle—one of the great “superhero misunderstandings”—before evolving into a deep and lasting friendship. The two would go on to become some of the closest allies in the heroic community.
Viceroy later left Earth to take a broader role in the cosmos, forming and leading the Liberators, a team dedicated to opposing oppression across the galaxy.
