The Karnak Empire is a vast interstellar civilization of thousands of worlds, ruled by the Karnak, an ancient humanoid people from the galactic center. Powerful, sophisticated, and deeply interventionist, the Empire is feared and admired throughout known space for its mastery of genetic engineering, military organization, and imperial statecraft.
The Karnak are best known for their legendary Gene Wizards, scientists whose command of biological design allows them to alter, uplift, weaponize, or redesign entire species. To their admirers, the Gene Wizards are miracle-workers. To their enemies, they are cold-blooded architects of biological empire.
The Karnak
[edit]The Karnak are an advanced humanoid race whose imperial culture combines aristocratic discipline, scientific ambition, and a deep belief in biological destiny. Their civilization arose near the galactic center and expanded outward over millennia, absorbing, uplifting, protecting, or conquering thousands of worlds.
Karnak society is hierarchical, ceremonial, and deeply confident in its right to rule. The Empire presents itself as a force of order in a dangerous galaxy, but its idea of order often includes genetic manipulation, client species, engineered soldiers, and carefully managed subject populations.
At the heart of the Empire is Karnamakis, the throne world of the Karnak, a planet of monumental cities, imperial palaces, gene-temples, orbital fortresses, and ancient dynastic archives.
Gene Wizards
[edit]The Karnak Gene Wizards are renowned across space for their ability to manipulate the genetic code of living beings with extraordinary precision. Their work ranges from medical reconstruction and species adaptation to the creation of entire engineered races.
The Gene Wizards have long shown particular interest in Earth and human DNA. Human adaptability, metahuman mutation, and the unusual frequency of superhuman emergence have made Earth a subject of repeated Karnak study, experimentation, and covert intervention.
Among their most famous creations or modified subjects are:
- Viceroy, the engineered warrior and imperial champion
- The bovine species used as SHOC troopers
- The space-traveling Starflyers
- The Earth hero Power Man
- The Praetors, elite beings whose bodies function as living fusion reactors
To the Karnak, such creations represent the highest expression of science.
To many others, they are evidence of monstrous arrogance.
The Empire
[edit]The Karnak Empire spans thousands of worlds and includes a vast array of subject peoples, engineered castes, military client species, protectorates, colonies, and allied systems. Its government is imperial, centralized, and deeply bureaucratic, with authority flowing from the throne world through noble houses, military governors, scientific orders, and specialized ministries.
Imperial law varies dramatically from world to world. Core Karnak territories are wealthy, stable, and heavily defended. Frontier regions may be harsher, ruled by military necessity or placed under the supervision of gene-engineered administrators and warrior castes.
The Empire’s strength lies in its ability to adapt conquered or allied species to serve specific roles within the imperial system.
The Thousand Year War
[edit]The Karnak Empire’s mortal enemies are the reptilian S'Taa, with whom they have fought a titanic interstellar conflict known as the Thousand Year War.
This war has devastated entire sectors of space, shattered civilizations, and driven both powers to extraordinary extremes. Karnak gene-engineering programs intensified during the conflict, producing soldiers, scouts, pilots, weapons-beasts, and survival-adapted populations designed for specific theaters of war.
The failed S'Taa invasion of Earth brought the war dangerously close to humanity and revealed the scale of interstellar politics surrounding the planet.
Earth Relations
[edit]Following the unsuccessful S'Taa invasion of Earth, the Karnak Empire established a permanent embassy in Los Angeles, located in the district known as Night City. Officially, the embassy exists to coordinate diplomatic relations, monitor S'Taa activity, and provide a point of contact between Earth and the Empire.
Unofficially, many Earth governments and superheroes remain deeply suspicious of Karnak intentions.
The Empire’s long-standing interest in human genetics, its past experiments on humans and superhumans, and its habit of treating younger civilizations as useful biological resources have made relations complicated at best.
Some see the Karnak as potential allies against cosmic threats.
Others view them as elegant, smiling conquerors waiting for the right moment.
Reputation
[edit]Across the galaxy, the Karnak Empire inspires awe, resentment, fear, and reluctant respect. It is a civilization of immense power and staggering scientific achievement, but also one willing to reshape living beings to suit imperial purpose.
The Karnak do not see this as cruelty.
They see it as destiny refined by design.
